SHINDIG Vs UGLY THINGS Vs BLACK TO COMM vs MISTY LANE
Just going through the GRAPEFRUIT issue of SHINDIG and what a great issue it is. For someone like me who read great zines like ROCKABILLY REVIEW in the Fifties, MOJO NAVIGATOR in the Sixties, BOMP, THE ROCK MARKETPLACE in the Seventies, the current crop really stands head to head with some of the greats of the past. SHINDIG's coverage of Grapefruit, John Carter, and the rest is really great and the writing style conveys a lot of what was happening. And to hear one of the MIKE STUART SPAN guys saying he personally took his old acetates to the studio to get mastered for the lps and cds was a great tale of him not wanting to have artifacts go missing in the post. A definite must have as is the most recent UGLY THINGS. The (continuing) MISUNDERSTOOD Story continues to be brilliant, particularly the moment when some ex-Misunderstooders play with the Ramones in a West Coast bar in 77 and realize that music is changing. Phenomenal writing. And don't forget to catch BLOG TO COMM online where Chris writes often and always digs out the greatest seventies obscurities.
